Hazelton
Stockton, CA 95205
Subject: Application#PA0400250 (QX)
(APN#249-050-17; 22469 S. Henry Rd.,Escalon)
Applicant: George Reed, Inc. (Quarry Excavation)
We are emphatically opposed to establishing a rock&sand quant'next to and behind our
property. We are the parents of 5 children and live in a beautiful home in the country.
We do not want to live in the middle of a mining quarry. Why would anybody want to
live by a mining quarry? Would you? I seriously doubt it! We don't want to move and
shouldn't have to. Not only would it devalue our property but, California law requires
that we disclose this proposal to potential buyers. And as stated above, I doubt that
anyone would be excited about buying a home next to an operating quarry.
What about our health? We shouldn't have to be subject to the dust pollution this would
cause. We already have allergies, which we have to take medication for. And 3 out of 7
of us use an asthma inhaler for breathing problems when needed. Quarry excavation will
cause hazardous dust such as crystalline silica, which is classified as a toxic air
contaminant that causes cancer. The State of California has determined under
Proposition 65 that crystalline silica, airborne particles of respirable size, is a carcinogen.
According to UCLA Labor Occupational Safety Health Program(LOSH), stationary
sources of crystalline silica are aggregate (rock, sand, and gravel)operations among
others. Wind entrainment of particulates disturbed by plowing, bulldozing and/or
grazing, or dirt roadway travel, as well as natural wind erosion, contribute to ambient
levels of crystalline silica. One of the primary stationary sources with emissions of
crystalline silica in California is sand & gravel mining. Quartz, commonly seen as sand,
is a major component of soil. Quartz is by far the most predominant form of crystalline
silica, occurring as sand. And the most probable route of human exposure to crystalline
silica is inhalation. The International Agency for Research on Cancer(LARC)has found
that crystalline silica inhaled in the form of quartz or cristobalite is carcinogenic to
humans. And we're supposed to have to live with this for 12 or who knows how many
more years? Using water trucks isn't enough!
