16. Separate the hydrant loop from the sprinkler service such that pressurization of any FDC
Fire Department Connection does not result in pressurization of the hydrant loop.
17. FDC's and Fire hydrants shall be located outside the collapse zone of the exterior wall.
1.5 times the height of the wall minimum.
18. A hydrant shall be located no further than 100'from an FDC.
19. Fire service lines shall be arranged such that there are no more than 6 appurtenances
between isolation valves per NFPA 24
20. Provide a fire hydrant loo .
21. Automatic gates shall be UL 325 listed and constructed and installed per ASTMF2200.
2016 CA Fire Code Section 503.5.
22. Automatic gates shall be provided with an Opticom and knox switch on both sides of the
gate allowing fire department entry without leaving the cab of the truck unless the
access road is an exit loop. Manual gates shall be provided with knox key boxes on
both sides of the gate.
23. For new construction, plans shall be submitted to the AHJ for determination of the
minimum water supply required before construction is started. Provide calculations of
the water supply and tank size. Our preliminary calculations indicated that the fire water
to be provided by a 40' diameter tank would be insufficient according to the method used
in NFPA 1142. This calculation was done as follows:
Assumptions
1) Occupancy hazard estimate: Warehouses such as those for furniture, general
storage, paint, paper, and woodworking industries-4.
2) Type of construction: Type 1116-1.0.
3) .Structure dimensions and volume: Area, 981,430 X Height 40=Volume
39,257,200 U.
4) Exposure hazard: None-0
Formula
WS(min) (gal)= VS(tot) /OHC 4*CC 1.0
Where:
WS (min) is the required water supply in gallons
VS (tot) is the volume of the building
OHC is the Occupancy Hazard Class
CC is the Construction Classification Number
Calculation
WS=3925720014* 1.0= 9,814,300 gallons
Reduction for sprinklers of 75% reduces water requirement to 2,453,575 gallons if ESFR
sprinklers are installed. A 50% reduction in water supply is allowed for other type
sprinklers resulting in water requirements of 4,907,150 gallons.
.2,453,575 gallons 17.48 G/ft3 =328,018 ft3 of water (ESFR condition)
328,018 ft3 water/area of 40 foot diameter tank(1256 ft2)=261' high tank which is
impractical.
Conclusion, the size and/or number of water tanks intended to supply fire water
are insufficient to provide the required volume of water for protection of a sprinklered
building. Please supply your calculations and justification for the planned water volume
and any assumptions you have made. This should be completed before the next
submittal since it will affect civil engineering and site design.
Plans Reviewed By: Robert Huff
Phone: (209) 831-6412
Email: Robert.Huff@cityoftracy.org
