EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
Ray Gonsalves will direct emergency activities at the terminal in the event of an
emergency.
While California Tank Lines, Inc. (Cal Tank) transports a variety of hazardous chemicals, the trailers
are normally empty (small retain prior to washing) when returning to the terminal. Therefore, the
risks to employees and neighbors are due to the storage of chemicals (caustic and sulfuric acid) and
Fre (diesel).
1. Spills
All chemical storage is contained so that risk of a spill endangering an employee or anyone off site is
extremely remote. Nevertheless, the Company has developed a spill cleanup procedure, as follows:
Identify the material leaking and the danger to persons and the environment.
Call for help if required, either co-workers or outside emergency personnel (911).
Put on proper safety gear before attempting to rectify the problem.
Stop the leak if possible (close a valve, plug an opening, transfer material to
another container, etc.
Ensure that the spill is contained. Construct earthen dikes, use sand bags, etc. if
necessary.
Pick up the spilled material if possible and place it in an approved container (tank,
drum, etc.).
Neutralize the area if appropriate.
Pick up any contaminated soil and dispose of it in an approved manner.
Document the spill and report it to the proper authorities.
2. Fire
Notify co-workers to evacuate to a safe area if necessary.
Shut off the power to the diesel pumps if the fire is in this area.
