4.3 City Directories
According to Mr. Ken Hafer, Director, Manteca City History Museum, the
location of the subject site is listed in the 1970 telephone directory as Robot Car
Wash, a drive-through automated car wash. There is no earlier listing for the site
in directories dating back to 1964. The subject site was reportedly included as
a parcel owned by Carlson's Trucking Company according to recollections of an
individual, Mr. Sam Farrow, interviewed for the above-referenced May 1991
Phase I Report. Mr. Hefer did not recall the subject property being part of or
used by Carlson's Trucking Company.
4.4 City Department of Building and Safety
According to Mr. Joe Meath, Building Engineer, the earliest permit on file for
the site address is dated July 1, 1969 and is a sign permit for a car wash (name
was not provided on application). The owner of the business was listed as Ro-
Bo. The next earliest permit is dated 10-29-67 and is for an addition to an
existing building. The owner on this permit is listed as B. Johnson; however,
Mr. Meath stated that this could be the contractor's name instead. There is no
demolition permit on file for the car wash. The next permit is dated 1982 and
is for interior remodelling of an existing office building. Mr. Meath could not
locate the June 3, 1979 permits mentioned in the May 1991 Phase I Report.
15
