presenting the possibility of electrocution and disruption of local services Personnel entering
into excavations are also at risk of asphyxiation or exposure to any airborne contaminants that
may accumulate in low-lying areas Where water is seeping into or accumulating in
excavations, there is an increased slip, tip and fall hazard, as well as a drowning hazard
3.2.5 Maintenance/Troubleshooting
' Equipment and machinery maintenance and troubleshooting work can expose project workers
to contaminated materials and other hazards Troubleshooting electrical and mechanical
equipment can expose workers to shock hazards, the potential for being struck by or caught in
moving parts of machinery and crushing or pinch hazards
3.2.6 Tool Use
It is anticipated that a variety of tools may be required during installation and troubleshooting
activities. Asphalt and possibly cement will be cut or broken through prior to drilling, which
will require the use of either "cookie cutter" press type cutters or wet-method concrete saws
' Both methods expose workers to multiple hazards, including lacerations, getting caught in or
on moving machinery and being injured due to accidental energizatxon.
Use of both hand and power tools may expose workers to cuts, lacerations or puncture
wounds of inadequate hand protection is win or tools are improperly stored Damaged hand
tools may also expose employees to injuries from shattered tools and flying debris, and
improperly stored tools may present a trip hazard or may fall on employees or equipment
Where power tools are required, additional hazards exist These hazards include electrocution
and/or shock due to usage in wet areas or use of damaged tools, trip hazards presented by
dangling cords and the potential for injuries incurred by accidentally energized tools
Use of pneumatic tools such as,jackhammers can cause cumulative trauma disorders such as
Raynaud's Syndrome, in which peripheral circulation and nerves may be damaged due to
prolonged repetitive motions Pneumatic and hydraulic tools are also a source of potential
injury m the event that lanes are not bled appropriately or accidental discharges or
disconnections occur
MVI1-29-94AZHSIHASP/94-0037 JAF 3-4
