Relatively
undisturbed soil samples will be collected using a California Modified split-spoon sampler loaded
with three 2-inch by 6-inch brass sleeves. The sampler will be driven by dropping a 140-pound
hammer from a height of 30 inches. The sampler will be driven 18-inches or until refusal into the
undisturbed soil below the bit on the lead auger.
Upon removal from the sampler, the sample sleeves will be separated using a clean knife. Based on
the amount of sample recovery, either of the leading sample sleeves will be preserved for possible
laboratory analysis by covering the exposed ends of the sleeve with Teflon sheets, plastic end caps
and sealed with tape.
Following sample collection, each preserved sample sleeve apA will be labeled with the boring
location, depth, time, date and sampler's initials. Appropriately sealed and labeled samples will be
placed in a chilled container under ice and will be transported under chain-of-custody procedure to
a DHS-certified laboratory.
Soil encountered in the borings will be visually classified by an AGE geologist or environmental
specialist in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). Additionally, soil
samples will be field-screened for the presence of volatile organic compounds using an OVM.
Investigation-derived waste, including soil cuttings and decontamination rinseate, generated during
drilling activities will be containerized in appropriately labeled DOT-approved 55-gallon drums and
stored on-site pending disposal. Appropriate disposal alternatives will be determined based on
laboratory results of soil and water analysis.
4.2. GRAB GROUND WATER SAMPLING PROCEDURES
The soil boring will be advanced to the top of the ground water table, as identified by collection of
a saturated soil sample, to collect a grab ground water sample. Once ground water has been
encountered, a hydropunch-equivalent water sampling device will be driven two to three feet into
the water-bearing zone.Ground water samples will be collected with a hydropunch-equivalent water
sampling assembly fitted with one-inch diameter 0.010-inch slotted temporary well screen. Each
ground water sample will be extracted by lowering a bailer through the hollow center of the drive
rods and into the screen section.Depending on subsurface and drilling conditions, grab ground water
samples may also be collected directly through the hollow stem augers using a new disposable bailer.
Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
