EW 1 is located in the northwest corner of
SMS Briners'tank yard (Attachment 2). The 154nch diameter borehole for EW 1 was initially
drilled to a depth of 165 feet on October 25,2005 by Bradley and Sons using the reverse mud rotary
method. An electric log was prepared by Welenco, Inc. on the same day. The well subsequently
collapsed during its construction on October 26,2005. The upper 100 feet of the well casing were
retrieved, and the hole was abandoned in the presence of a San Joaquin County environmental health
specialist.
On November 3,2005,another borehole was drilled about twelve feet west of the original borehole.
The second 15-inch diameter borehole for EW 1 was drilled to a depth of 165 feet by Bradley and
Sons again using the reverse mud rotary method. EW 1 was constructed using 8-inch diameter SDR-
17 PVC threaded casing with 29 feet of screen(three screened 9.98-foot segments including 0.33 foot
thread). The screen(0.030 inch slot size)was placed between 127 and 156 feet in depth, and a four-
foot sump with a solvent-welded PVC end cap was placed at the bottom of the casing. Casing
centralizers were installed at the top and bottom of the screen and in 40-foot intervals to ground
surface. The bottom five feet of the borehole filled in with native materials prior to the casing
installation;a one-foot bentonite seal was placed between 159 and 160 feet in depth. SRI# 8 sand
was placed in the well annulus as a filter pack between 104 and 159 feet in depth. A four-foot
bentonite seal was placed between the filter pack and the sand-cement grout surface seal, poured in
the presence of a San Joaquin County environmental health specialist on November 4, 2005. The
well was completed with a steel-reinforced concrete surface pad and a PVC end cap was placed on
the wellhead. The lithologic description of the borehole, the electric log,and the as-built well profile
are provided in Attachment 3.
EW 1 was developed by bailing and pumping(using an electric submersible pump) at rates of up to
about 15 gallons per minute(gpm), including surging and swabbing. The well development was
terminated when EW l produced water with a turbidity of less than 5 NTU at a pumping rate of about
500 F',-sC SCE- aL . Woodland CA 55655-4025 . 5306S10109 .
