PUBLIC HEALTH SERVES t,,N
Aa
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION
Ernest M. Fujimoto, M. D., M.P.H., Acting Health Officer
304 E. Beacon Stations #419, #474, & #641
Stockton, CA
In order to better evaluate underground tank sites undergoing investigation from an
unauthorized release, San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental
Health Division (PHS-EHD) will require groundwater samples from now on to be
additionally analyzed for Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE).
The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), in a memo dated February 13,
1996, has concluded that MTBE can be measured by GC/PID as a target compound in
methods 8020, 8021, orTPH/BTEX, when a PID is used in combination with a FID. As
part of the project quality control, DTSC has recommended that at least one sample per
site which was positive for MTBE also be confirmed by GC/MS (Method 8260).
Detection limits should not be higher than 5.0 ug/l (ppb).
Any new soil borings (i.e.; CPT's, Hydropunch, Geoprobe, etc.) or well installation for
these sites should include soil sampling for MTBE also and detection limits should not
be higher than 1.0 mg/kg (ppm).
Once consistent and valid data has been reviewed and evaluated by PHS-EHD, the
sampling requirement for MTBE in the groundwater may be modified.
Thank you for your continuing cooperation. Please contact Michael Infurna at (209)
468-3454 should you have any questions.
Donna Heran, REHS, Director
Environmental Health Division
Michael Infurna, Senior REHS MargIt Lagorio, R HS
Site Mitigation Unit Lead Senior
MI
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
