Task 2—Soil and Groundwater Sampling
ENVIRON proposes advancing up to 8 soil borings and collecting grab groundwater samples
from two of these locations. No permanent groundwater monitoring wells will be installed. Soil
and groundwater samples will be collected for laboratory analysis of:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH - diesel and oil ranges) by USEPA Method 8015
• Volatile organic compounds (VOCs, using Encore®samplers) by USEPA Methods
8260/5035
• Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by USEPA Method 8270
• Dissolved metals including mercury by USEPA Methods 601013/7400
Groundwater samples will be collected through a retractable stainless steel well screen, or
through one-inch diameter PVC well screen installed into the borehole. Groundwater samples
for metals analysis will be filtered in the field prior to analysis. All groundwater samples will be
labeled and stored on ice in a closed container and delivered to the laboratory within 24 hours of
collection. Chain-of-custody procedures will be followed during sample storage, transportation,
and delivery.
Soil samples will be advanced using direct push drilling push technologies (i.e., Geoprobe®). At
select boring locations, continuous soil cores will be collected, described in general accordance
with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS), and screened for the presence of volatile
organic vapors using a photoionization detector(PID). Samples will generally be collected from
the most impacted interval based on field screening, or if no impacts are apparent, from a
designated interval based on the nature of the potential historical release. Prior to each use and
reuse, soil-sampling equipment will be cleaned using a low phosphate wash, rinsed with clean
water and allowed to dry.
All soil samples will be retained in the designated sampling sleeves and sealed with Teflon-lined
caps. All soil samples will be labeled and stored on ice in a closed container. Soil samples will
be delivered to the laboratory within 24 hours of collection. Chain-of-custody procedures will be
followed during sample storage, transportation, and delivery. Soil samples collected, but not
initially selected for chemical analysis, will be archived in the laboratory pending the initial
sampling results.
After completion of sampling, the borings will be abandoned in accordance with applicable state,
regional, and/or local requirements. Significant quantities of drilling residuals are not expected
during this investigation. Generated drilling residuals will be placed in 55-gallon drums, sealed,
labeled, and placed on the Property for future off-site disposal at an appropriate facility following
receipt of analytical results.
It is anticipated that ENVIRON can complete the above field activities in two days with one
ENVIRON geologist. All borings will be backfilled with a portland cement slurry (5 to 1 ratio) on
the same day they are drilled.
The following table and attached figure provide a summary of the sample locations, analysis,
and rationale.
2
