CA 94086
re: Use of EPA Method 8240 for oxygenate analysis
Dear Mr. Aks:
1 You asked whether EPA Method 8240 is acceptable for oxygenate analysis. As
explained below and in the attached memo, Method 82406 and other methods from
Update li of SW-$d6, "Test Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste," are acceptable for the
analysis in the Hazardous Waste Fields of Testing. MTBE and other oxygenates can
be measured by both 8240 and 8260: the tab doing the work should demonstrate
through the analysis of spikes that the analytes can be measured reliably at the level of
interest. I encourage you to make the transition to EPA Method 826Q6, which is the
currently approved GC-MS method for volatile organics in SW-848. In the meantime,
both Methods 8240 and 8260 are acceptable methods for volatile organics by GC-MS.
i
If you have any additional questions, feel free to telt me at(510) 540-3112.
i
i
$i"co ely,
anon P.
