TASK 3 - Soil Vapor Extraction Air S ar in Feasibilitv Stud
A portable internal combustion (IC) system will be setup on-site and operated for a period
of approximately 24-hours to determine the subsurface permeability to vapor, radial
influence of the vapor extraction well and the initial hydrocarbon recovery rate.
The air sparging pilot study will be performed to determine the radial influences of the AS
system at different injection rates/pressures, the pressure and vacuum requirements for
effective treatment and effective capture of the volatilized materials and water table
mounding caused by the operation of the AS system.
These parameters will facilitate in the design of the SVE/AS system and will be used to
determine the number of vapor extraction and air sparging wells, the spacing of the wells
and the selection of a vapor remediation system (i.e. internal combustion, thermal oxidation,
etc.). The selection of a vapor remediation system will be determined by evaluating the
concentrations of extracted hydrocarbon vapor and the estimated supplemental fuel
requirements for each of the vapor remediation systems. The determination of these'
parameters are absolutely necessary for the design and implementation of a SVE/AS system
that can meet the remediation objectives. Task 3 includes the following:
♦ Setup of the IC system.
♦ Performance of a 24-hour SVE/AS pilot test. The test will include all necessary
equipment, monitoring and fuel required for successful operation of the pilot test.
♦ Measurement of vacuum pressures, vacuum flow rates, air injection pressures and
rates and water levels during the pilot test.
♦ Collection of soil vapor samples, groundwater samples and depth to groundwater
measurements. The soil vapor and groundwater samples will be analyzed by a state-
certified laboratory for TPH as gasoline and BTE&X. Groundwater will also be
monitored for dissolved oxygen. Baseline samples will be collected prior to initiation
of the pilot test.
TASK 4 - Analyze and Interpret Data
Results of the SVE/AS pilot test and all data and samples collected will be evaluated to
determine the feasibility of the proposed remediati6n method. The results of the SVE/AS
pilot test will be included in the Final Remedial Plan (Task 5)
TASK 5 - Preparation of a Final Remedial Plan
♦ The Final Remedial Plan (FRP) will present results, findings and conclusions of the
above investigation and will include a description an design of the proposed
b,,Ander Se.vim,,e. 3
SP.94-11-9166VZC6 .SMAS F%t Twt
