N WIN
KLEINFELDER
File No.: 20-3304-01
February 1 , 1990
Page 4
Logs of Borings at the corresponding sample locations. The results of all the tests,
excluding the R-Value, are summarized on Plate VIII. The R-Value test results are
discussed in the "Pavement Sections" section of this report and are presented on Plate
IX.
CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Foundations
We recommend that the structure be supported on spread or continuous foundations
bearing on the existing soils or on Engineered Fill. We recommend that foundations
for the single-story structure extend a minimum_ depth of 12 inches below the lowest
adjacent finished soil subgrade, interior or exterior, whichever controls . In order to
provide more uniform support to the foundations, we recommend the loose soils
exposed in the foundation excavations be hand compacted prior to placing reinforcing
steel. Any loose soil pockets or debris encountered during foundation excavations
should be overexcavated and recompacted as described in the "Site Preparation and
Grading" section of this report.
With these provisions, we recommend a maximum allowable bearing pressure of 2,000
pounds per square foot for dead plus live loads be used in design. This value can be
increased by one-third for the total of all loads, including wind and seismic forces.
The recommended minimum width of foundations is 12 inches. The anticipated total
settlement is less than J-inch. The majority of this settlement should occur during
construction as building loads are placed.
We recommend that the reinforcing design of the foundations be provided by the
structural engineer. We note that the above-stated bearing value is a net value ano
the weight of concrete in the portion of the foundations which extends below grade
i can be neglected in proportioning the foundations.
1
L
