%.We %W11
5.0 EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION
Specific equipment decontamination procedures are described in the
following paragraphs. Equipment decontamination will include:
• Provision of appropriate decontamination areas and equipment.
• Sampling equipment decontamination (California modified sam-
pler, continuous soil sampler, liners, bailers) between individual
sampling points to minimize potential cross-contamination.
Reusable, nondedicated sampling equipment will be decontami-
nated between each sample location.
• Drilling equipment decontamination (augers, drill stems, drill
bits, other downhole equipment) will be conducted after each bor-
ing is complete. The drill rig will be decontaminated between
each boring location if groundwater is encountered, or if the work-
ing end of the rig is visibly soiled.
5.1 ESTABLISHING DECONTAMINATION AREAS
The Project Leader shall assure that appropriate decontamination areas
are set up and clearly marked with flags, marker cones, or construction
tape. Decontamination areas shall be selected and equipped to provide
containment of all solids, water or other fluids or materials originating
from the decontamination activities. The Project Leader shall also
assure that all equipment needed to contain or control decontamina-
tion materials and products are available and installed. Separate decon-
tamination areas may be established for decontamination of drilling
and sampling equipment.
5.2 SAMPLE EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION PROCEDURE
The following steps will be used to decontaminate sampling equip-
ment:
• Personnel will dress in suitable safety equipment to reduce per-
sonal exposure.
• Equipment heavily caked with soil and/or other material will be
placed in a wash tub and the soil and/or other material will be
scraped off with a flat-bladed scraper. The scrapings will be placed
in an appropriate container for disposal.
5-1
