Work Plan
Facility Demolition and Soil Excavation
J Stockton,California
Sierra-Pacific Project No.95-128.06
J
Contract workers will use protective clothing, steel-toed boots, gloves, full-faced respirators, and
other essential items to avoid being injured by exposure to sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and other
corrosive chemicals which may be present in buried pipes. Each buried structure must be demolished
or removed with extreme caution. As discussed in section 3.1 all buried product lines will be
vacuumed-out prior to demolition.
ASTs which contained ammonia-based products or flammables, will be tested for combustible gases
and vapors prior to cutting or welding. The percent oxygen and Lower Explosive Limits (LEL) will
be determined prior to cutting and welding on these ASTs. Tanks will be filled with dry-ice prior to
cutting, if necessary.
During the demolition work, the contractor will attempt to minimize the volume of spilled feed
products and other liquids by using plastic sheeting or containers. Spill control equipment will be
placed underneath pipe connections, man ways, and valves prior to their removal. Any remaining
residual feed products or decontamination rinsates will be placed in an open poly-tank provided by
-r Cargill. Relatively pure feed product constituents will be placed in 55-gallon drums or ASTs. Acids
and bases will be stored separately in safe and product compatible containers. Labels, identifying the
contents of each drum or container will be placed on all containers. Cargill's plant supervisor will
be informed immediately should workers discover an unknown substance or significant volume of
product.
Scrap metal will be staged at the site in steel roll-off containers, or directly transported from the site
to the salvage yard or landfill. During the demolition work, steel scrap metal will be staged, in a
predetermined location, at the site for recycling. Items designated for recycling will be
decontaminated, if necessary, using a high-pressure washer prior to stockpiling the material.
