Soil Sampling Work Plan
Cargill,Port Road No.8,
Stockton,California
Sierra-Pacific Project No.95-128.01
Chemical test strips can be difficult to interpret if the contaminated soil contains a broad
spectrum of organic, ammoniacal, and oxidized nitrogen compounds. Difficulties in test data
results are because nitrogen compounds are subject to microbial conversion. With proper use,
.-. nitrate test strips can yield results within 50 ppm of laboratory results.
Confirmation Testing
Six impact samples and six composite soil samples will be submitted for analysis at Sequoia
Analytical for TKN, ammonium, and nitrates. Three soil samples will be analyzed for common
anions. Sample chain-of-custody forms will be completed. Samples will be marked with random
~' numbers and placed in an iced cooler and transported to an analytical laboratory.
3.4 Task 4 - Backfilling and Site Cleanup
Following sample collection, granulated bentonite will be placed in each open boring and
hydrated under the supervision of the San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department
(SJCEHD). If necessary, soil cuttings will be used to fill the holes to the surface. Plugged
borings may,be marked with numbered survey stakes.
3.5 Task 5 - Report Writing
A site map showing the location of nitrogen-enriched soil zones will be prepared on the basis
of the field sampling and semi-quantitative chemical tests. Cross sections and estimates of the
volume and tonnage of contaminated soils will be prepared.
4.0 HEALTH AND SAFETY PROGRAM
A detailed Health and Safety (H&S) Plan to support the fieldwork will be developed as a
separate and stand-alone document. The H&S report will be used for safety training and as
a field reference document for project operations. All personnel will be required to participate
in site safety meetings, discussions of work safety, and the establishment of sound emergency
Sierra-Pacific Groundwater Consultants, Inc. 5
