PHS/EHD has the following comments for your consideration.
The groundwater samples collected on August 20, 1995 did not detect methyl tertiary
butyl ether (MTBE) at 2.5 ppb. Groundwater samples also collected from monitoring wells
MW2, MW4, and MW5 underwent EPA Method 8240 analysis for chlorinated solvents and
tetra chloroethene (PCE) was detected.
The groundwater samples collected on November 5, 1995 did not undergo MTBE analysis,
please note that generally two rounds of analysis are necessary to confirm analytical
results; therefore, the next round of samples collected should undergo MTBE analysis.
The depth to groundwater has significantly increased within the last two years and a
number of monitoring wells are screened below first water. Please include in the next
monitoring report a summary of well construction details and an evaluation of the current
monitoring capabilities.
A revised corrective action plan dated June 29, 1995 was submitted which included a
proposal to continue groundwater monitoring and to initiate a limited investigation in the
area of former dispensers and product piping. An additional monitoring well downgradient
of monitoring well, MW2 was also proposed. As this proposed well was located in an
area already occupied by a building, its installation was postponed. PHS/EHD indicated in
a telephone conversation on August 1 , 1995, that final comments with regard to the
proposed corrective action plan would be withheld pending the results of the additional
investigation proposed.
In September 1995, additional soil borings were drilled and sampled in order to determine if
there were any additional sources of contamination that might explain the contaminant
concentrations observed in groundwater samples. PHS/EHD has yet to receive the report
of findings for this investigation. Please submit the summary report immediately.
A Division of San Joaquin Countv Health Care Services
