Sandblast grit is one of the larger volume hazardous waste sources,
• however, the material is well contained within the sandblast equipment. As
an additional precaution to keep any sandblast grit from scattering outside
the area, operation and maintenance staff will sweep the area periodically
with a mechanical sweeper.
All used sand will be placed in DOT approved 55-gallon barrels with
covers. After four barrels are filled and p.laced on a pallet, chief,
buildings, grounds, and Utilities Branch will be notified for its disposition
(Extension 2146) . The DOT approved barrels should be obtained by the using
activity.
c. Dispersal of wastes is prevented.
The prevention of waste dispersal is most effectively achieved by
preventing hazardous waste spills. Procedures to prevent spills and
necessary actions once a spill has occurred are detailed in the ISCP and
SPCCP. (See Annex I and J)
Containment systems for each storage building were described in
Section VI. Specific procedures for Building 605 , include using absorbent
material available at the building to encircle the spilled liquid to prevent
dispersal . Powdered wastes are misted to reduce airborne exposure to
hazardous chemicals.
As discussed in Section VI, the hazardous waste to be stored in
• Building 530 consists solely of contaminated sand and empty hazardous waste
drums. No liquid wastes will be stored in the building. The building floor
is a four-inch concrete slab which will contain any spilled solid material .
The entrance to the building consists of an overlapping concrete lip. The
sides of the slab are ten inches above grade. Therefore, no water can enter
the building due to storms. The solid concrete floor provides a smooth,
workable surface for the effective cleanup of any spilled solid waste.
d. Prevention of produced hazardous gases, mists, or vapors.
Hazardous wastes are containerized and sealed for storage. The
containers are only opened to add compatible wastes or conduct sampling for
testing programs. SHAD personnel have been properly trained and outfitted
with equipment necessary to protect health and ensure safety while performing
hazardous waste handling duties.
e. Equipment contaminated with waste is decontaminated before being
serviced or used in other than a hazardous waste area.
Equipment which becomes contaminated during waste handling is thoroughly
decontaminated before further use. Dependent upon the nature of the
contaminant, residual waste will be chemically neutralized or absorbed. This
material will be handled as a hazardous waste and will be suitably contained
and disposed of off site. All expendable equipment, tools, and clothing will
be placed in containers and disposed of off site.
• VIII-14
sa,. tb
