The
first involves the conversion of agricultural biomass into a briquette-
sized product suitable for use in biomass-fired power plants. Crop
production in the county and in the state requires recycling or disposal
of agricultural biomass. Ordinarily, agricultural biomass is burned in
the open field on specified burn days or is chipped in the field and
transported to one of several biomass-fired power plants in the San
Joaquin Valley. A San Joaquin County Air Quality Management Plan (AQMP)
objective is to reduce the amount of open field burning as one of a'
number of strategies to achieving regional ambient air quality standards.
By collecting the biomass and converting it to briquettes, which have a
uniform density moisture content and heating value, open field burning is
2-21
101-46.R4 4/7/69
