turn movements. At the Mariposa/Austin intersection, the lack of an
eastbound right turn and westbound left turn deceleration lane would
require project traffic to slow (and possibly even stop for left turns)
before turning from the high-speed, through travel lanes. This would
disrupt Mariposa Road traffic flow and increase the chances for rear end
accidents. In addition, project trucks turning from Austin Road to
Mariposa Road would also tend to cause ambient traffic to reduce speed
near the intersection while traveling behind the trucks accelerating up
to speed. The slight upgrade on the Austin approach to Mariposa Road
could also increase the time required for truck turn movements (from
Austin) at this location.
There would be similar concerns with truck acceleration and
deceleration at the project access on Austin Road and at the Austin/Arch
intersection although potential safety concerns would be somewhat less
due to the lower ambient volume levels at these locations.
Mitigation Measures. A left turn deceleration lane should be
provided on the westbound Mariposa Road approach to Austin Road. This
potentially may require moving the railroad gate and flashing light
fixtures on the north side of the road to provide enough width at the
crossing for three travel lanes.
A right turn deceleration lane should be provided on the eastbound
Mariposa Road approach to Austin Road. This turn lane would potentially
entail a large fill area due to Mariposa Road being elevated to meet the
level of the railroad crossing.
The site's Austin Road frontage should be widened to its full half
section width. A left turn deceleration lane should be provided on the
southbound approach to the project access and a right turn deceleration
lane should be provided on the northbound approach to the project access.
In addition, a northbound acceleration lane should be provided between
the project access and Mariposa Road (this potentially would be included
within the site frontage widening) .
3-33
I01-32.R3 4/10/89
