Ms. Katie L. Hower Project 22560-203.002
July 2, 1997
Page 2
observe the removal of the pipelines and collect soils samples. These soil samples were
analyzed by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 8015 modified (m) for
petroleum hydrocarbons. Of the 59 soil samples submitted for chemical analysis, 38
samples contained detectable concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons at concentrations
ranging from 1 to 4,500 parts per million. An additional soil sample was submitted for
chemical analysis by EPA Method 8270 and for metals. Only two constituents (2-
methylnaphthalene and phenanthrene) were detected in the soil sample analyzed by
Method 8270. According to the Raney report, concentrations of detected metal were
within normal background concentrations2.
On September 26, 1995, EMCON conducted soil and shallow groundwater sampling at
the site (Figure 2)3. On October 12, 1995, after evaluation of data from the initial
sampling event, EMCON completed additional soil borings to further assess soil and
groundwater. Seventeen soil borings were completed using a Geoprobe to assess the
lateral and vertical extent of petroleum-hydrocarbon impacted soils and groundwater. Soil
and groundwater samples were collected from selected borings and submitted for chemical
analysis. The soil and groundwater samples were analyzed for benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) by EPA Method 8020, and a high boiling point
hydrocarbon scan by EPA Method 8015m for petroleum hydrocarbons. Sixteen soil
samples were also analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH)s by EPA
Method 8310.
On February 13 and 14, 1996, EMCON supervised the completion of groundwater
monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, and MW-34. After completion, the wells were developed
and, on February 16, 1996, the wells were purged and groundwater samples were
collected.
Soil and groundwater samples collected during completion of the borings and
groundwater sampling were analyzed for BTEX by EPA Method 8020, and a high boiling
point hydrocarbon scan by EPA Method 8015m for petroleum hydrocarbon. In addition, a
soil sample collected from MW-1 at 20 feet and groundwater samples collected from the
monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, and MW-3 were also submitted to the laboratory for
analysis of PAHs by EPA Method 8310.
2 Raney Geotechnical. 1995.
