Ms. Katie L. Hower Project 22560-203.002
July 2, 1997
Page 3
The first quarterly groundwater sampling event of 1997 was conducted on March 13.
Samples were collected and analyzed for gasoline range Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons
(TPHG), diesel range Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPHD), BTEX, PAHs, and
dissolved lead. The only constituent detected was TPHD in the sample collected from
MW-1, at a concentration of 130 micrograms per liter (µg/L). Because dissolved lead was
not detected in any of the samples, the analysis for lead was omitted from the analytical
suite for this sampling event and future sampling events. The decision to omit dissolved
lead from the analytical suite was discussed in a January 20, 1997, letter from Ms. Katie
Hower of CPL to Mr. Joel Weiss of the RWQCB which was subsequently approved by
Mr. Joel WeissS.
GROUNDWATER SAMPLING PROTOCOL
On May 29, 1997, monitoring wells MW-1, MW-2, and MW-3 were purged of at least
three casings volumes of water and sampled using a Teflon bailer. Before purging, the
water level in each well and the total depth of the well were measured using an electrical
sounder and well integrity was recorded. After water level measurements were recorded,
the bailer was lowered into the well just below the-water level, retracted, and inspected for
the presence of floating product or sheen. During purging, the electrical conductivity, pH,
and temperature were monitored. These parameters are presented, along with
observations concerning turbidity, in the Water Sample Field Data Sheets in Appendix A.
Following collection, each sample was placed in a cooler containing frozen gel packs.
After sampling, the cooler was transferred directly to a representative of NEI/GTEL
Environmental Laboratories (GTEL). Chain-of-custody documentation, which is included
in Appendix B, was initiated at the time of sampling and accompanied all samples
throughout transport to the laboratory.
CHEMICAL ANALYSES
Groundwater samples collected during the second quarter sampling event were analyzed
for TPHG and BTEX by EPA Method 8020A and TPHD using "Test Methods for
Evaluating Solid Waste. Physical/Chemical Methods" SW-846. Samples were also
5 RWQCB. 1997.
