5.1 Respiratory Protection <br /> Respiratory protection may be required during asbestos sampling activities unless modified by the <br /> SSO. When sampling dry, friable materials suspected of containing asbestos, personnel shall don a <br /> half-mask or full-face,air-purifying respirator fitted with P100 filter(magenta)cartridges. <br /> 5.2 Protective Clothing (Level D) <br /> The protective equipment to be donned by personnel is listed as follows: <br /> • Body Protection: Body protection shall include the use of"work clothing," including long pants, <br /> and long-sleeved shirts and orange vests for all personnel. <br /> • Foot Protection: Foot protection shall include the use of leather boots with steel toes for all <br /> personnel. <br /> • Eye Protection: Protective eyewear(i.e.,safety glasses)shall be worn by all personnel. <br /> • Hand Protection: Hand protection will include disposal latex or nitrile gloves for handling <br /> samples. <br /> 5.3 Protective Clothing (Level C) <br /> Level D Protection may be up-graded to Level C protection without justification if at any time the <br /> effectiveness of controls is a concern. However, Level C protection shall only be downgraded upon <br /> approval by either the Project Manager or SSO, in consultation with the Consulting CIH. <br /> Respiratory protection will include full-face or half-mask air-purifying respirators fitted with a <br /> combination organic vapor, or combination organic vapor acid gas - P100 filter (black or <br /> yellow/magenta) cartridges for personnel handling dry, friable materials suspected of containing <br /> asbestos or lead, or encountering petroleum hydrocarbon saturated soils. <br /> 5.4 Miscellaneous Safety Equipment <br /> Additional protective equipment to be available to all personnel working at the site is a cell phone <br /> and/or Portable radios/walkie talkies. <br /> 6.0 DECONTAMINATION <br /> The following decontamination (cleansing/disposal) procedures for equipment and PPE have been <br /> developed with the intent of reducing the potential for the transfer of asbestos from the site. <br /> Decontamination should be performed in direct proximity to each work area. <br /> 6.1 Equipment Decontamination <br /> Decontamination of asbestos sampling equipment shall include a wash with a soap and water solution <br /> between homogenous material sample groups and before vacating the site. <br /> Stockton 6-Lane,Task Order No.82 Caltrans Contract 06A l 141,EA 10-03A1001 <br /> Project No.S9200-06-82 - 16- December 2009 <br />
