4.3 Sample Handling
The sample collector will label samples collected in the field for tracking purposes. The sample
label will contain the project name and number, sampling location, sample identification number,
and date and time of collection. Soil samples will be identified by boring number followed by the
collection depth(e.g., sample LNC-SVE1-20.5 indicates a soil sample collected from soil boring 1
and a depth of 20.0 to 20.5 feet below ground surface).
Groundwater samples will be collected in 40-milliter VOA vials and will be immediately place in
an iced-chilled cooler maintained at 4 degrees Celsius. The cooler will be filled with packing
material to protect the sample containers from breakage during shipment. The chain-of-custody
form will be placed in a sealed plastic bag for protection. Samples will be shipped to the laboratory
on the collection day or the following day for two-day groundwater sampling events. If samples
are temporarily stored overnight by the sampling team, then the sample cooler will be stocked with
fresh ice at the end of the workday.
4.4 Sample Documentation
Field daily reports will be maintained describing daily field activities and any significant events
that occur. The field daily reports will serve as the basis for reconstructing field activities and will
be used to record information that may affect the sampling results. All entries will be legible,
recorded in black ink and signed by the field staff person making the entries. If corrections are
made by that person, the original entry will be crossed out with a single line and a revised entry
made. All corrections will be dated and initialed. No information will be removed from the daily
reports by project staff. Typical entries in the field daily reports include:
• Site name and address
• Field person's name
• Team member's names and positions
• Time of site arrival and departure
• Other personnel on site
Environmental/LNC/Workplan/Appendix 2.wpd 11
