3.3 Site History
The following sections of this Workplan provide a summary of the LNC site ownership and
hazardous materials from past investigations reported at the LNC site.
3.3.1 Lustre-Cal Nameplate Corp. Site Ownership
There is little information about the site land use prior to 1926. According to available Sanborn
maps, the property now occupied by LNC was originally part of the National Fruit Products
Company, Inc., during the 1920s and later was owned by the Shewan-Jones, Inc. winery in the
1930s (Sanborn Maps, 1916, 1926; Ecology and Environment (E&E), 1987).
LNC reportedly began operating at the 110 East Turner Road facility in July 1970. LNC initially
leased the property from the Norma Ackel Trust(Ackel) and subsequently purchased the
property in 1972. LNC has owned the property on a continuous basis from 1972 to the present.
LNC operations at the 110 East Turner Road site ceased during 2004. Since that time the
building has been unoccupied.
3.3.2 Hazardous Material Usage and Waste Management Practices
LNC manufactures colored aluminum nameplates and labels using a lithographic/etching
process. Ammonium biflouride and sodium hydroxide have been reportedly used as acidic and
caustic agents, respectively, in the etching process (E&E, 1987). A proprietary product called
"Smut-Go NC," containing nitric acid and hydrochloric acid, has also reportedly been used at the
LNC site (E&E, 1987). The formulation of this product used by LNC, called"Turco Liquid
Smut-Go NC,"reportedly contains ferric sulfate, nitric acid, and sodium biflouride. Sulfuric acid
has also been reportedly used in the process. Wastewater from the etching process was
reportedly pH balanced and then discharged to the Lodi municipal industrial sewer system.
M ain\D:AEnvironmentaI\LN CV\10152007.wpd 12
