Previous investigations have identified four areas of surface VOC disposal concern on and in the
rear of the LNC site. These areas are identified as Areas A, B, C and D (Figure 7) (Blymer,
1988). In addition to these four areas a concrete tank formerly used to store bunker oil for plant
boilers at the old winery operations is identified as part of Area B (Figure 7). The concrete tank
has been reportedly not used to store fuel oil since approximately 1935 when winery operations
were discontinued.
The 1987 E&E report describes two incidents based on E&E's research where spent etchant
waste was spread onto the ground on or adjacent to the LNC property. The E&E report indicates
that spent etchants were discharged to: (1) an underground gravel sump (in Area B) for a period
of approximately 3 months in 1972 (Figure 7), and(2)the ground surface (in Areas C and D,
Figure 7) for approximately 2 days in 1978. The E&E report also indicates that for approximately
one year in the 1983 time period a total of approximately 360 gallons of still bottom waste from a
solvent recovery system was reportedly spread onto the ground surface in Area A(Figure 7). A
mass balance analysis of materials usage and waste could not be prepared because sufficient
records were not available (Geomatrix, 2003, WZI, 1996).
M ain\D:AEnvironmentaI\LN CV\10152007.wpd 14
