Remedial Action Objectives
Remedial action objectives will be developed based on:
• Contaminants and media of interest
• Remediation goals
• Available remedial technologies
The objectives will be specific, as necessary, while allowing adequate evaluation of a range of
alternatives.
Identify Remedial Action Alternatives
As described in the RDFS Guidance (USEPA, 1988), identifying remedial action alternatives
will include:
• Identifying remedial technologies that would be effective in achieving remedial action
objectives;
• Screening and evaluating technologies based on effectiveness, implementability, and
relative cost;
• Combining technologies into a range of treatment and containment alternatives that
satisfy remedial action objectives;
• Identifying technologies appropriate for use at the LNC Site requires consideration of
physical conditions, soil and groundwater characteristics, and types of chemical
compounds present. Potentially applicable technologies will be evaluated and screened
for effectiveness, implementability, and cost consistent with regulatory agency
guidelines. Pilot studies or bench tests necessary to assess the suitability of technologies
may be conducted.
Technologies found to be best suited for the site will form the basis for developing a range of
alternatives. Each alternative will identify the area or areas to which one or more technologies
may be applied. For example, surface covering to limit rainfall infiltration or other controls to
limit access and accidental excavation might be employed at areas where contaminants are at low
M ain\D:AEnvironmenta1\LN CV\10152007.wpd 44
