Bedding material shall extend at least three inches <br /> below the outside of the pipe barrel . The bedding <br /> material shall provide uniform support to the full <br /> length of pipe. <br /> 2. Pipe shall not bear on bells or joints. The trench shall <br /> be excavated at the pipe joints as necessary to provide <br /> approximately 1/2 - 1 inch of clear space below the <br /> bell . No wedging or blocking of the pipe will be <br /> permitted. <br /> 3. Bedding shall be compacted to a relative density of not <br /> less than 92 percent. <br /> D. Control of Water <br /> 1. Where water is encountered in pipe trenches , the <br /> Contractor shall furnish and install and operate such <br /> pumps or other devices that may be necessary for <br /> removing the water during the construction of the <br /> pipelines and conduits . Trenches shall be kept from <br /> water while the pipe or other structures are installed , <br /> while concrete is setting and until backfill has <br /> progressed to a sufficient height to anchor the work <br /> against possible flotation or leakage. <br /> 2. Water shall be disposed of in such a manner as not to <br /> cause damage or nuisance. <br /> E. Excavation in Compacted Fill <br /> 1. Where pipelines and structures are to be placed in <br /> engineered fill , the trenches shall be excavated in <br /> compacted fill . Bedding material shall be compacted <br /> fill. <br /> 3. 06 TRENCH BACKFILL <br /> I <br /> A. General <br /> 1.
