B. Initial Backfill
1. Initial backfill shall be the material placed on the
bedding after pipe joints have been completed ,
inspected , and passed by the Engineer , and shall extend
to a point six (6) inches above the top of the pipe.
2. The material shall be carefully placed in lifts not to
exceed six ( 6) inches in height, brought up evenly on
both sides, so as to completely fill all spaces under
the haunches , and compacted to 92% , all done so as not
to disturb or damage the pipe . Jetting will not be
allowed.
C. Top Backfill
1. Top backfill shall be the original top soil and shall be
compacted to a density of not less than 90 percent.
D. Backfill in Compacted Fill
1. Where trenches have been excavated in compacted fill,
these trenches shall be backfilled with the fill
material excavated , and recompacted, in 6 inch layers,
to 95% relative density by a means other then jetting.
E. Trench Backfill Compaction
1. When mechanical means are used to obtain the required
compaction, Contractor must exercise extreme caution so
as not to damage or disturb the pipe . This is
particularly true when compacting directly over top of
pipe in the placing of initial backfill.
F. Other Backfill Requirements
1. Where cribbing is allowed in the trench, the fill shall
be carried to a height sufficient to prevent the
surrounding ground from cracking or caving into the
trench before the cribbing is removed.
3 . 08 GRADING
A. Grading shall be performed at such places as are indicated
on the Drawings, to the lines, grades, and elevations shown
and shall be made in such a manner that the requirements for
formation of embankment can be followed . All unacceptable
material encountered , of whatever nature within the limits
of grading , shall be removed and disposed of as directed.
During the process of excavation , the grade shall be
maintained in such condition that it will be well drained at
EARTHWORK
02200-8
