Standard Operating Procedure
For work with HAZARDOUS WASTE MANAGEMENT.
PI: Jianhua Ren Building(s): Classroom Building
PI Signature: Room Number(s): CR 121
Revision/Review Date: Designated Work Area:Research Laboratory
Departmental Approval? Yes ® No ❑ Departmental Signature:
EH&S Approval? Yes ❑ No I ❑ I EH&S Signature:
Instructions for each section of this form are available and should be referenced as you complete this SOP form. If an
experimental protocol has been written and incorporates all of the relevant safety information required in this form, it
can be used(only with Department and EH&S approvals) in lieu of this template.
Summary(Overview):
The purpose of this procedure is developed to reduce the potential of illness or injury by implementing
practices to identify and effectively manage the handling of hazardous waste. Consult with the Risk
Management Department for additional guidance on how to handle/manage hazardous waste.
The procedure describes the neutralization of aqueous acid/base-waste in the lab. Researchers will be able to
apply the procedure to safely dispose of neutral aqueous solutions.
1. Hazard Identification
a. Pre aration and Use:
To properly store hazardous materials, make sure to use appropriate hazardous waste containers.Use sealable
containers that prevent the release of harmful chemical substances. Make sure that containers are compatible
with the waste being stored and are manufactured with weather and corrosion resistant materials. Ensure that
all employees are thoroughly familiar with proper waste handling and emergency procedures, relevant to
their responsibilities during normal facility operations and emergencies.
Procedures used: Benchtop(diluted acid/base solutions) or fume hood(concentrated acid/base solutions).
The procedure will be applied to waste as it accumulates in the laboratory because of routine daily research
activities.
Note:If identified as a process, provide additional detailed procedural steps for the use of each hazardous chemical in Section 5,below.
b. Chemical Hazards and Risk:
Chemical waste can be corrosive, toxic, flammable, chronic to health, O O 0harmful to the environment, and explosive, which can result in
41>
injury, fire,or explosion. ❑ ❑x ❑x ❑
Flammable Toxic Corrosive Oxidizer
Acid/Base waste is corrosive and can have severe and potentially
fatal effects for individuals exposed to it. Environmental hazard is OI> 4>
high as well especially if the neutralization waste contains heavy
metal salts. ❑
Explosive Environmental Harmful Chronic
SDSs for common acids and bases used in the lab are available
below:
Hydrochloric acid (HCI)
hitps://fscimage.fishersci.com/msds/I I 155.htm
Sodium hydroxide (NaOH)
hLtps:Hfscimage.fishersci.com/msds/21300.htm
