The USTs
located at Building 517 consisted of two 4,000-gallon single-wall steel tanks which were excavated and
removed in March 1990. Subsequent investigations occurred upon excavation and in 1995 to further
characterize the extent of contamination of petroleum hydrocarbons and evaluate remediation
alternatives. The investigation consisted of the installation and sampling of three monitoring wells. A
two-phased approach for the fieldwork is planned for this investigation. The first phase of the field
investigation will consist of delineating the extent of groundwater contamination using the
geoprobe/direct push method and soil analysis, as well. The second phase will consist of installation and
sampling of three additional groundwater monitoring wells to be installed in the shallow water bearing
zone (SWBZ).
We concur with the data quality objectives of the Work Plan and the locations of the proposed geoprobe
borings. We reserve the right to participate in the final locations of the monitoring wells once the results
of Phase 1 are completed and the data analyzed. Further investigation of the deeper aquifers may be
deemed necessary based upon the results of groundwater monitoring overtime.
Please contact me 72 hours prior to field activities so I may plan to observe sampling and/or well
installation.
