Phase II Site Assessment Workplan/Health and Safety Plan October 1996
for the Lodi Rail/Multimodal Station Project No. E168-1
Augered borings will be drilled using 8-inch diameter hollow-stem augers. Cuttings will be
continuously logged by a registered geologist or civil engineer in accordance with USCS
classification and any anomalous features will be noted. Driven soil samples will be obtained
at approximate intervals of 5 feet unless observations (such as contamination) suggest
different intervals. Cuttings and samples will be screened with a PID. Borings will be
backfilled with a cement-bentonite grout.
Trenching and drilling is expected to occur concurrently with approximately 1 day for
trenching and 3 days for drilling. Trench spoils will be placed and tamped back into the
excavation. Drilling spoils will be placed in steel 55-gallon drums, labeled, capped, and
stored on a remote portion of the site until further characterization of soil cutting
contamination, if present, is completed. Following laboratory analyses of soil samples,
cuttings from borings showing no contamination will be spread in soil areas on-site. Cuttings
from borings showing contamination will be characterized and disposed of appropriately.
The backhoe bucket and augers will be rinsed with a steam cleaner and/or TSP solution after
completion of each trench or boring. Rinse water will be contained and transferred to a
plastic 55-gallon drum for further characterization and disposal if necessary. Rinse water
drums will be stored at a remote portion of the site.
Sampling
Soil samples will be obtained using a driven California split-spoon sampler lined with 2-inch
diameter by 6-inch long steel or brass tubes. Soil samples for laboratory analysis will be
collected by advancing the boring to the desired sampling depth, removing the auger plug,
and lowering the sampler through the auger. The sampler will then be driven below the
auger tip (a total of 12 inches minimum) using a hydraulic driven 140-pound hammer. The
lowermost (lead) tube will be immediately removed from the sampling device, capped with
teflon tape and plastic end caps, then taped and sealed. The sample will be labeled, logged
on a chain-of-custody/sample management form, and placed in a iced cooler kept at a
temperature of approximately 4°C until delivered or picked-up by the laboratory for analyses.
If it appears necessary to collect soil samples from backhoe trenches, samples will be
collected using a hand-held slide hammer fitted with a split spoon sampler fitted with 2-inch
diameter by 6-inch long steel liners.
Sampling devices will be washed with a TSP or Alconox solution and rinsed in deionized
water following each sampling event. Rinse water will be contained and transferred to a
plastic 55-gallon drum for further characterization and disposal if necessary. Rinse water
drums will be stored at a remote portion of the site.
4
V ESPANA GEOTECHNICAL CONSULTING
