0 0 <br /> Department Procedures SAF 09-65 Handling Hazardous Materials <br /> Department Procedures <br /> Overview The following sections of the HHM Program address day-to-day activities for <br /> routine hazardous waste management that occur in specific departments. Other <br /> procedures (such as,procedures for handling spills and unknown materials) <br /> that may occur in one or more of the departments are contained in the General <br /> Procedures. <br /> Garden Department (D-28) <br /> Overview A Garden Department(Department 28)is present in many of The Home Depot's <br /> locations. This department stores and sells various plants (trees,shrubs, and <br /> flowers)as well as numerous products for lawn and garden care.Some of these <br /> products (such as certain pesticides,herbicides,fungicides,and fertilizers) are <br /> hazardous materials. <br /> Waste generated The following wastes may be generated in this department: <br /> ■ Fertilizer residues from daily sweeping of the fertilizer aisle and The Home <br /> Depot's"Bay-A-Day" Program (discussed below),all of which are <br /> conservatively disposed of as hazardous waste under the HHM Program <br /> ■ Spilled products,some of which result in hazardous waste <br /> Primary The Garden Department Supervisor and Garden Associates are responsible for <br /> responsibility for properly completing the HHM tasks outlined below,with the assistance of the <br /> compliance designated HHM associates. <br /> Reducing waste Garden Associates must help reduce the amount of waste generated in the <br /> generation in the Garden Department by: <br /> Garden Department <br /> ■ Handling fertilizer bags in a manner that prevents ripping or tearing of the <br /> bags (when handling bags,work gloves are recommended) <br /> ■ Using bag patches and overpack bags to allow torn or damaged fertilizer bags <br /> to be sold at a discounted price. If any hazards,warnings,cautions markings <br /> or instructions for use are not readable on the original package, the bag must <br /> be managed as a hazardous waste spill. In this event, call a designated HHM <br /> associate. <br /> Daily sweepings and Following is the procedure for daily sweeping and the"Bay-A-Day" Program. <br /> maintenance of the <br /> Fertilizer Aisle NOTE: If the department is closed for the season,discontinue the sweeping <br /> program and note this (for example,with an N/A)in the sweep log calendar <br /> and in any audits completed.
