Procedures for Managing Universal Wastes SAF 09-65 Handling Hazardous Materials <br /> Procedures for Managing Universal Wastes <br /> Overview The RTV Associate manages most of the universal waste,but all designated <br /> HHM associates are responsible for completing Universal Waste labels. <br /> Universal wastes are wastes that are more common and special requirements <br /> have been established for recycling them.There are special storage procedures <br /> and a unique label for universal wastes. <br /> NEVER throw any universal waste into the trash compactor or throw the <br /> materials away in any other improper way. <br /> Universal wastes Examples of universal wastes include the following: <br /> ■ Non-leaking batteries (Exception: automotive-type batteries are NOT <br /> universal waste but are HAZARDOUS WASTE) <br /> ■ Intact(unbroken)fluorescent tubes <br /> ■ Computer monitors and television picture tubes <br /> ■ Computers, telephones,radios,and other consumer electronic devices("e- <br /> waste") <br /> ■ Mercury thermostats <br /> ■ Mercury switches, thermostats and tip switches in portable heaters,washing <br /> machine out-of-balance switches,silent wall switches are universal wastes <br /> ■ Mercury thermometers <br /> ■ Pressure or vacuum gauges that contain mercury <br /> The Home Depot manages these items in accordance with the special standards <br /> for these wastes.They are collected in the central storage area.The contracted <br /> hazardous waste transporter picks up the universal wastes during the <br /> hazardous waste pick-up. <br /> Fluorescent bulbs For unbroken fluorescent bulbs,an associate must to the following: <br /> ■ Take the fluorescent tubes to the central storage area. <br /> ■ Call a designated HHM associate to set up a new bulb box if one is not already <br /> set up or the box is full.The designated HHM associate must call 3E and <br /> follow 3E's instructions to complete the label (see "Labeling universal waste <br /> containers"on page 49). <br /> ■ Place the fluorescent tubes in the appropriately sized bulb box used for <br /> fluorescent tubes. <br /> ■ Close the lid to the box and place it above the red flammable cabinet prior to <br /> leaving the central storage area. <br /> If there is a broken bulb, it must be handled as hazardous waste.Call a <br /> designated HHM associate who will call 3E and follow the procedures for <br /> handling spills and other hazardous waste. <br /> Revised: 12 January 2007 47 <br />
