Pharmacy Hazardous Waste Disposal, Continued <br />Unwanted Each individual unwanted compounding chemical must be placed in separate <br />Compounding StrongPak self-sealing bags. Each StrongPak self-sealing bag must then be <br />Chemicals placed into a second StrongPak self-sealing bag. The bag must then be <br />added to the StrongPak "PHARMACY" container. Double bag all unwanted <br />compounding chemicals. <br />If a container is leaking, absorbent (e.g., paper towel) must be added to the <br />first bag to soak up any liquids that are or are likely to leak from the <br />container. <br />Other Non- Other non -controlled pharmaceutical items with no value include: <br />Controlled <br />Items with No • Compounds that are not picked up by customers and cannot be <br />Value returned to inventory <br />• Containers that cannot be emptied (materials have hardened, bottle <br />neck is blocked, etc.) <br />• Customer returns in limited circumstances (see below) <br />CVS/pharmacy is not licensed to process returns for patients' <br />unused/unwanted medication. Therefore, it is against CVS/pharmacy policy <br />to accept returns for unused/unwanted medications. Any requests from <br />patients for assistance in the disposal of medications should be directed to <br />the local environmental agency. <br />However, in light of public protection and patient safety concerns, a <br />Pharmacist may determine in his or her professional judgment that <br />prescription returns may be accepted in limited situations, such as: <br />• Dispensing incident <br />• Faulty/defective product <br />• Broken tablets, a defective inhaler, etc. <br />• Prescriber error <br />Non -controlled pharmaceutical items with no value, as listed above, must be <br />managed through the Pharmacy Hazardous Waste Management Program. <br />Remove all PHI and place the item in a StrongPak self-sealing bag.
