NCS operations began at Rough and Ready Island circa 1960. In 1965, the
supply depot operations were deactivated and full control of the facility was assigned to the
communication station. The Navy still maintains NCS operations at Rough and Ready Island.
From 1945 to 1979, various industrial and maintenance operations were performed at the
facility, and a variety of waste disposal practices were implemented. The Navy has conducted
investigations to assess the potential for environmental impact resulting from these operations and
disposal practices. These Navy investigations were performed under Department of Defense
Installation and Restoration Program and, previously, as a part of the Navy Assessment and
rControl for Installation Pollutants Program.
The abandoned UST located at NCS Stockton is proposed for removal and preliminary
contamination assessment under the Navy's abandoned tank program. Leaded gasoline for the
adjacent fueling station pumps was stored in this UST. It is located immediately adjacent to
Building 817 B. The tank capacity is approximately 2,500 gallons, however, the age is unknown.
iSurrounding Population:
Residential ( ) Industrial (X)
n
11
Rural ( ) Urban ( ) Unknown ( )
M
