site activities are established to minimize the possibility of worker exposure to hazardous
contaminants. These procedures require the cooperation of all investigators and visitors to the
project and will be strictly enforced by the OSHSC. The OSHSC shall establish the physical
limits of the contaminated areas at the site and shall instruct all personnel and visitors on the
boundaries of these exclusion zones. The personnel should be aware of mechanical, electrical,
temperature and noise hazards.
1 Mechanical Hazards
Temperature Hazards
Temperature hazards are based on the actual conditions existing during on-site work.
Heat Stress
tWhen temperature exceeds 70°F, take frequent breaks in shaded area. Unzip or
remove coveralls during breaks. Have cool drinking water available. Drink small
amounts frequently to avoid dehydration. Count the pulse rate for 30 seconds as early
as possible in the rest period. If the pulse rate exceeds 110 beats per minute at the
beginning of the rest period, shorten the work cycle by one-third.
I A-11
11
Sampling Activity
• Do not stand near the heavy equipment and earth moving equipment. Verify that all
equipment is in good condition.
• Listen for warning signals on backhoe equipment.
• Choose on-site communication, based on site conditions and the nature of the work,
before work begins at the site.
• Do not enter a restricted area without the required PPE (hard hat, steel toed/steel
shank work boots, eye protection).
• Be aware of protruding edges, such as glass, nails and torn metal that could puncture
protective clothing and inflict puncture wounds.
• Be aware of slippery surfaces that can cause falls, spills, and trips.
• Utilize wet methods as much as possible to eliminate dust. No visible dust should be
present on site.
• Maintain at least 10 feet clearance from overhead power lines. Avoid standing in
water when or if operating electrical equipment.
• Maintain at least 5 feet clearance from the excavation pit when equipment is not
operating and at least 25 feet when operating.
Temperature Hazards
Temperature hazards are based on the actual conditions existing during on-site work.
Heat Stress
tWhen temperature exceeds 70°F, take frequent breaks in shaded area.
