C
Other objects, such as tools or clothing may carry the allergen. Avoid touching the face
or genitalia with unwashed hands. Burning Anacardiaceae produces smoke particles that carry
the allergen and that may produce extremely severe systemic response.
Venomous Arthropods and Snakes
Snakes and venomous arthropods, including insects, spiders, ticks, scorpions, centipedes,
millipedes, and others, create a hazard when their habitats are disturbed. Wasp and bee stings
account for a number of fatalities each year. In the United States, snake bites rarely cause
fatalities because effective treatments have been developed. The best defense is to understand
where these creatures may be found and either avoid them or kill them before they can cause
harm. Should a bite or sting occur, first aid should be applied immediately and medical
treatment sought.
The specific hazards present on the site and methods to prevent injury due to these
hazards are described below.
4.5.1 Waste Tvt)es
4.5.1.1 Solids
Solid waste generation will consist mainly of soils. Also, solid wastes generated will
include personal protective equipment and related wastes generated during work activities. The
primary health risks from solids handled will be the potential for human exposure to benzene,
toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene due to direct contact with contaminated materials. Therefore,
all individuals involved in the handling of such waste will be required to comply with personnel
protective equipment requirements specified in this document.
13
