SAN JOAQUIN <br />Department of <br />PLANT MAINTENANCE <br />Page of <br />6 9 <br />GENERAL HOSPITAL <br />Policy/Procedure No. <br />Effective Date <br />Date Replaces <br />1-7-93 <br />Title of Policy/Procedure <br />HAZARDOUS MATERIAL RELEASE PROCEDURES <br />MITIGATION AND ABATEMENT PROCEDURES <br />Incipient fires will require the use of the appropriate fire <br />extinguisher operated by trained individuals in each department. <br />Initial actions for trained persons in the event of a spill will be <br />to contain the material if they can, using pillows, pads, or other <br />absorbent material available. <br />After evaluating a spill, the Hazardous Materials Coordinator will <br />determine the need for contacting a commercial spill response <br />contractor. <br />All spills and spill residues will be handled as hazardous waste, <br />and disposed of to appropriately licensed facilities, following <br />established procedures for the waste involved. <br />Any required decontamination of workers, tools and the spill site <br />will be performed before the spill response is complete and reentry <br />is allowed. <br />PREVENTATIVE MEASURES <br />Fire extinguishers, spill control equipment and personal protective <br />equipment are provided in areas where hazardous materials are <br />stored or used (i.e., laboratory, boiler room, etc.). <br />Flammables are stored in approved flammable lockers, or sprinklered <br />fire -rated rooms (i.e., laboratory, paint shop, etc.). <br />All floor and storm drains are protected from accidental releases <br />by the use of berms, drip pang, or other devices. <br />Infectious waste storage areas are locked to prevent unauthorized <br />access or potential exposure. <br />TRAINING <br />The Hazardous Materials Coordinator is responsible for coordinating <br />the training of new and continuing employees who handle hazardous <br />materials, could potentially be exposed to hazardous materials, or <br />,X4.7 <br />
