PPE Failure
If any worker experiences a failure or alteration of their PPE that
compromises their health and safety, that person (accompanied by
another worker if necessary) must immediately leave the exclusion
zone. Reentry will not be permitted until the equipment has been
repaired or replaced and the worker is fit enough to resume work.
WORK ZONES
Exclusion Zone
This is the area where contamination does or could occur. Level D
PPE must be worn in this area. The perimeter of this zone will be
marked with barricades and CAUTION tape (waist level) and have
access only through the decontamination zone.
Exclusion one Activities
Exclusion zone activities will consist of an underground storage
tank removal, including disconnecting and flushing of UST fuel lines,
soil excavation, inerting of the tank, tank removal and soil sampling.
Decontamination Zone
This is a transition zone between the exclusion zone and the support
zone. Sampling equipment and tools are cleaned or disposed of in
this zone. PPE is sequentially removed and contained or cleaned as
workers move from the exclusion zone to the support zone.
Equipment Decontamination Procedures
If diesel fuel contamination is present in fill or native soil, some
equipment and PPE may become contaminated. A thorough
decontamination is essential to prevent the transfer of chemical
contaminants to workers, vehicles, uncontaminated on-site areas
and off-site areas. Decontamination procedures are as follows:
1 . Remove as much excess soil as possible in the exclusion zone.
2. Using brushes, scrub the equipment in tubs of Alconox®
solution (or equivalent), being careful to contain all cleaning
water.
3. When the contaminants have been removed from the
equipment, take the equipment to a rinse area for final rinsing.
All cleaning water and rinsate must also be contained.
