Avoid overextension. <br /> soil from eroded • Use proper techniques(hold shovel close to body, <br /> areas/washouts (if necessary). spread the legs,and scoop the dirt at a comfortable <br /> pace;avoid twisting movements). <br /> • Take breaks if shoveling for longer duration to prevent <br /> back strain/injury. <br /> Hand Injury. Inspect shovel to make sure it is in good condition. <br /> Wear leather gloves. <br /> Dust particles in eyes(when windy). Wear safety glasses. <br /> Potential contact with impacted soil. Wear level D PPE(long sleeves,long pants,safety glasses, <br /> safety vest,steel-toed boots,gloves,and hard hat). Use nitrile <br /> loves under work gloves if contacting dirt with hands. <br /> Install silt fence by hammering Hand Injury. Wear leather gloves. <br /> stakes (if necessary). Inspect hammer to make sure the handle is not <br /> cracked and the head of the hammer is intact. <br /> • Use hammer that weighs 51bs or less. <br /> • Do not hold wooden stake by hand. Use channel- <br /> locks or other devices. <br /> • Hold the hand a few inches away from the head of the <br /> hammer to prevent crushing injury to finger/hand. <br /> Uneven terrain;working on a sloped surface.
