i 041-250-10 & 041-250-26. REGIONAL SETTING: The site is located near the northern boundary of the city of Lodi , approximately 1/2 mile west of Highway 99. The main lane of the SP Railroad is the easterly property line, with Turner Road on the south. Residences lay to the west and south of the site. The Mokelumne river is immediately to the north, and farm land and wineries lie to the north of the river. Stockton is about 12 miles to the south , and Sacramento 40 males to the north. Plate I shows more details of the surrounding area. AREA GEOLOGY: The property as situated in the southern part of the Sacramento Valley, which as the northern portion of what as referred to as the Great Valley of California. The topography as very flat, with a gradient to the west-southwest at about 10 feet per mile. Approximately 1/3 of the property is in the overflow portion of the the Mokelumne raver, which is immediately to the north. Refer to Plate II for details. DEPTH TO GROUNDWATER: Water level measurements taken on March 30, 1988 an the three monitoring wells which were on the property at that time were recorded at an average of 39 ' bgl . However, County Flood Control District Maps show that in the Spring of 1983 & 1986, groundwater was measured at 35 ' bgl in the area. Water level measurements taken in the monitoring wells indicated a gradient towards the southeast, which as supported by data shown on Plate IV. LOCAL SOIL PROFILES: According to the 1952 study published by the University of California, Berkley, the soils in the area consist primarily of Columbia very fine sandy loam & Hanford sandy loam. These soils are developed from recent alluvial fans & flood plain deposits,. They are generally underlain by unconsolidated sands & clays with undeveloped profiles_ Refer to Plata III, which is from that publication, for details. PRIOR USE OF SITE: The property had been occupied by a winery & distillery from 1909 until 1986, when operations were discontinued and usable equip- ment and fixtures were removed from the site.
