TEST RESULTS
The hydrostatic test results indicated both the primary and secondary AST shells did not
leak at the time of the test. Pressure readings were collected every five minutes for one
hour. No fluctuation in pressure was recorded during the test. Test results are provided
in Table 4.
5.0. SEISMIC ANALYSIS
A seismic analysis was provided to verify the AST will not tip or turn over during a seismic
event. Seismic data used in the calculation is included in Table 2. The calculations are
included as Appendix A.
5.1. CALCULATION
Seismic analysis is calculated by using AST specifications and finding the horizontal
shear, the overturn moment and the safety factor the AST will withstand during a seismic
event. Seismic data used in the calculation is included as Table 2. The calculations are
included as Appendix A.
5.1.1. Tank Specifications
The 800-gallon AST primary and secondary compartments are manufactured from
10-gauge steel with a standard 1/8-inches in thickness, 72-inches in width, 48-inches in
length and height of 61-inches. Superior Tanks (manufacturer) indicated that the tank
weighs approximately 2,000 pounds (lbs.) when empty. Waste oil is temporarily stored
within the tank. 800-gallons of waste oil weighs approximately 5,920 lbs. The total seismic
load of the tank is calculated to be 2,000 lbs. when empty and 7,920 lbs. when full.
5.1.2. Calculation Results
The pounds of horizontal shear are calculated at approximately 504 pounds force (Ibf).
The tank overturn moment is calculated at approximately -4,719-pound force foot (Ibf ft).
The safety factor was calculated at approximately 4.7. The tank without additional
components is sufficient to not spill during a potential seismic event for this area. Figure 3
shows the AST top and east side with dimensions. The seismic calculations are included
as Appendix A.
