26 October 2000
AGE-NC Project No. 98-0466
4.1. PREPARATIONS FOR FIELD WORK
Prior to conducting field work, the following activities will be conducted:
• Obtain permits for the soil borings.
• Mark boring locations a minimum of 48 hours prior to field wor.
• Notify American Moulding and Millwork, Inc. 48 hours prior to field work to obtain
clearances for boring locations regarding underground structures or utility lines.
• Notify PHS-EHD 48 hours prior to commencement of field wor c to schedule inspection.
4.2. DRILLING
Soil borings will be advanced utilizing a truck-mounted, hollow-stem cbiH rig and 8-inch diameter
hollow-stem augers. Cuttings generated during drilling activities will be placed on plastic sheeting
and covered. Rinseate will be containerized in properly labeled DOT- approved 55-gallon drums,
and stored on-site in an area lacking public access. Disposal alternatives will be evaluated based on
results of soil and water analysis.
4.3. SOIL SAMPLING
Soil samples will be collected at 2 feet bsg and at five-foot intervals beginning at a depth of 5 feet
bsg to total depth, utilizing a California split-spoon sampler and brass sleeves. The sampler will be
driven by dropping a 140-pound weight from a height of 30 inches (blo counts). The blow counts
will be recorded on boring logs. Upon soil sample retrieval, the middle b s sleeve will be removed
from the sampler. The ends of the brass sleeve will be immediately covered with Teflon or aluminum
sheets, sealed with plastic end caps, secured with tape and immediately paced in a chilled container
for transportation under chain of custody to a state-certified laboratory. ach sample sleeve will be
labeled with the boring location, sample depth, sample time, sampling date and sampler's initials.
Duplicate samples will be monitored for the presence of organic vapousing a photo-ionization
detector(PID: Thermo Environmental 580A, 10.0 eV, calibrated to isoblttylene)and will be visually
described on boring logs using the Unified Soil Classification System(DSCS).
All sampling tools and brass sleeves used for sample collection will be roughly rinsed with clean
water after washing with a solution of Alconox. All hollow stem augers be steam-cleaned prior
to advancement of each borehole.
Advanced GcoEnvuoiwental,Inc.
