'• 29 January 2002
' AGE-NC Project No. 98-0466
' sandy silt) textures from the surface to as much as 50 feet below surface grade(bsg). The soil types
vary laterally and with depth and do not exhibit significant lateral continuity.
Ground water is being monitored for a diesel release via seven ground water monitoring wells on
the extreme southern portion of the site (Figure 3) by Dames & Moore (D&M), on behalf of
' American Forest Products Company. Groundwater occurred at approximately 35 feet below surface
grade in March 1999, and was flowing toward the northeast (D& , April 1999, Quarterly
Groundwater Monitoring Report- March 1999). The Dames & Moore report shows the historical
' local ground water flow direction generally northward, varying from we t-northwest(297°) to east-
southeast (103').
' Ground water is considered to be of beneficial use and is used for domestic, industrial and
commercial uses. The nearest surface water feature in the vicinity of property is the Calaveras
River, located approximately 3,300 feet north of the site.
1.3. SITE HISTORY
Information on the site history was developed through review of vario reports by lCeinfelder and
D&M, discussions with Mr. Glen Gallup of AM&M, file reviews at the ')an Joaquin County Public
' Health Services - Environmental Health Division(PHS-EHD) and RW CB, and review of various
documents supplied by AIM&M. The site was operated by American Forest Products Company
(AFPC)for manufacturing wood products from 1921 to 1987(D&M; 1992). AM&M purchased the
' property in 1987 and continues manufacturing wood furniture. The industrial operation initially
occurred primarily on the southern portion of the property (Figure 3), but has moved to the north
portion of the property(Figure 4).The southern portion ofthepropertyis notcurrently inuse, several
' buildings have been removed. The Finger Joint/Box Cover Building was recently destroyed by fire.
' As reported by Dames & Moore in Site Remediation Report, Former merican Forest Products
Facility, 2801 West Lane, Stockton, California,(1992),Bechtel National,Inc. (BNI) and Kleinfelder
conducted investigations of the subject site in 1984 and 1985. The Kleinfelder report was not
available to AGE. BNI conducted two site investigations in the area of the former maintenance
building on the south portion of the site in 1985 and 1986;the 1986 repo' ,presumably prepared for
AFPC, was not available to AGE. According to BNI, diesel contamination(1,000 mg/kg) associated
with a 10,000-gallon diesel UST located west of the maintenance buil ' g and PCP (33 mg/kg) and
' lead(200 mg/kg) was encountered in shallow soil in an unpaved parking lot west of the Finger Joint
Building. In addition, BNI collected and analyzed two shallow (0 to 6 inches) soil samples for
' background concentrations of arsenic, chromium, copper, mercury and lead. One sample was
collected on-site near the employee parking lot and one was collected off-site east of the subject
Advanced Gc.Rnviroomental,Inc.
