29 January 2002
' AGE-NC Project No. 98-0466
' 3.7. LOGGING
Sample duplicates were monitored for the presence of organic vapor u ing an organic vapor meter
equipped with a photo-ionization detector(PID: Thermo Environment 580A, 10.0 eV, calibrated
to isobutylene) and were visually descnbed on boring logs in accordance with the Unified Soil
Classification System(USCS). Boring logs are included as Appendix E.
' 4.0. FINDINGS
Laboratory analysis of soil and ground water samples were utilized to quantify the hydrocarbon-,
VOC-, SVOC-, phenol-, formaldehyde- and metals-impact on the two subsurface media sampled.
Boring logs were utilized to model the subsurface lithology at the site.
' 4.1. LITHOLOGY
Generally, clayey silt, silt, silty sand and poorly graded sand were enco tered in each of the borings
at various depths. The soil types vary laterally and with depth and doof exhibit significant lateral
continuity. Approximately 70% of the soils encounterd during the in+estigation were composed
' primarily of fine-grained material including sandy silt, silt and clayey silt. Coarse-grained soils were
encountered in thin intervals(approximately 5 to 15 feet thick) and appeared to vary in thickness and
to have limited continuity laterally. Boring logs are included in Appendix B.
4.2. ANALYTICAL RESULTS OF SOIL SAMPLES
Laboratory analysis of soil samples fromthe above referenced areas dete ted elevated concentrations
of TPH-d, TPH-mo and formaldehyde in various samples as described below. Contamination by
' SVOCs, VOCs and phenols was not detected above reporting limits; detected concentrations of
metals in soil are at or near background levels. Table 1 contains backgr and levels for metals in soil
at the site.
4.2.1. Former Truck Parking Area
One soil sample from both soil borings PB 1 and PB2 was submitted to MAI for analysis as noted
above. Chromium was detected in soil samples PB 1-5 and P132-5 at con entrations of 53 mg/kg and
52 mg/kg, respectively. Lead was detected at concentrations of 6.4 mg/kg and 4.6 mg/kg,
respectively, and zinc was detected at concentrations of 70 mg/kg in both samples. The detected
ddvanced CeaEnviron eat4 Inc.
