' 11 September 2001
AGE-NC Project No. 98-0466
• Electrical transformers thought to contain polychlorinated biphnols (PCBs);
' • Hazardous materials storage area(s); and
• Two former bum pits and a former teepee structure incinerator.
The USTs have been removed from the site, are actually sumps, or arehe responsibility of a third
' party. The PHS-EHD has no open or pending UST sites on the site and I'the RWQCB indicated at a
31 July 2001 meeting with AGE personnel that the former USTs on the$ite pose no concerns at this
point in time. The tank uses, capacities, removal histories and investigations were presented with all
' available information in the AGE-prepared Site Environmental History d ited 04 May 2001 which has
been submitted to the RWQCB.
' The electrical transformer contents have been tested and labeled and are not considered a potential
threat to ground water. The remaining potential concerns have been investigated as described below.
3.0. PRIOR SITE ASSESSMENTS
' Several environmental concerns have been assessed at the site inclu ng the use and storage of
pentalchloropehnol, steam cleaning operations, active and in-active se tic systems, several wash-
down areas, storm water retention ponds, a former teepee structure util zed for incinerating waste,
two bum pits and stockpiled soil generated during excavation of the teepee structure and burn pits.
3.1. PENTACHLOROPHENOL
' Pentachlorophenol was utilized on a periodic basis to treat wood utilized for lumber storage
purposes, but was not part of the normal industrial process. A concrete tank (UST 18820010)
extending approximately 10 feet into the subsurface south of the Ray Bond area of the Finger
' Joints/Box Factory Building was utilized to treat the wood `stickers'. T eated wood, possibly some
PCP, and lead batteries were stored west of the Finger Joints/Box Factory Building in the truck
parking area shown on Figure 3.
3.1.1. Parking Area
BNI collected soil samples from the parking lot area in 1985. One shallow soil sample(0.5 to 1 foot
' bsg)contained 33 mg/kg PCP.Kleinfelder collected additional shallow soil samples from 8 shallow
pits in the area on 15 September 1987.PCP was detected in only one of eight samples analyzed and
was detected at a concentration of 430 micrograms per kilogram(gg/kg). One sample analyzed for
dioxin/furan isomers did not contain detectable concentrations ofthe compounds.Lead was detected
Advanced GwEnvironmental,Inc.
I
