i
2.0 PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF WORK
The purpose of the Baseline Investigation was to document baseline environmental conditions in
soil and groundwater at the site for comparison to future environmental conditions. The scope of work
consisted of the following four tasks:
I
• TASK 1 - Surface Soil pH Evaluation;
1
j • TASK 2 - Subsurface Soil Investigation;
• TASK 3 - Groundwater Investigation; and
J • TASK 4 - Site Investigation Reports.
f
Each of these tasks is described in more detail below.
i
Task 1 - Surface Soil DH Evaluation
This task is specific to Parcels I and II and consisted of evaluating the pH of soils in former coal
stockpile areas. This task is not be discussed in this report.
1• Task 2 - Subsurface Soil Investigation
} This task consisted of evaluating soil from specific areas of the three parcels. Soil samples were
collected from hand augured borings and from soil borings advanced for monitoring well installations.
Hand auger borings specific to Parcel III were located in the following areas:
• Near the center of the former copper concentrate stockpile (B-3); and
• Under the point of worse case observed spillage from each of the four conveyors (B-4
through B-7).
JSoil borings and monitoring wells specific to Parcel III are illustrated in Figure 2.
J The locations of the former stockpiles and points of worse case observed spillage were discussed
with DBT representatives prior to the advancement of the borings. From each of the hand auger borings,
two relatively undisturbed soil samples were collected when conditions were adequate. Target sample
depths included near the ground surface (0 to 6 inches below ground surface (bgs)), and from the
capillary fringe (approximately 10 feet bgs). Soil samples were analyzed by a California certified
• laboratory for the following constituents:
SAC28.013 December 20, 1991
2
t
