Mr. Charles White
September 6, 1988
Page 2
- An expanded description of the flushing system to be
implemented.
- A description of the operation plan for the groundwater
extraction system and subsequent treatment.
- Alternatives for managing the materials in the North
Area separately or in conjunction with overall pond
waste management.
- Monitoring programs required to assess effectiveness of
each evaluated alternative.
- Technical evaluation of lateral migration barrier for
the site conditions.
The report submittal date is contingent upon completion of
outstanding data collections activities. However, it is
anticipated that the report will be submitted by October 17,
1988.
2. Group 1 Arsenic Reanalyses. Upon confirmation of the
apparent mistake in arsenic analytical procedures, an
initial group of approximately 162 samples were released for
reanalysis. The initial samples selected were those samples
that were at or near the background plateau concentration,
as discussed in August 2, 1988 correspondence from T.A.
Hickey to Jim Austreng. The results of reanalysis of Group
1 arsenic samples will be included in the Final Engineering
and Environmental Analysis Report, but an advance copy will
be sent when received.
3. Group 2 Arsenic Reanalyses. The soil samples from the
interior surfaces of the surface impoundment and certain
areas of the North Area were not included in the Group 1
since the initial results of the samples indicated conclu-
sively that these solids contained arsenic. Reanalyzing to
account for aluminum interference will not appreciably alter
the current characterization of the extent of arsenic
contamination in the soils. It is acknowledged, however,
that reanalyzing these samples will result in datasets which
are directly comparable. Group 2 arsenic samples, there-
fore, have been released for reanalysis. The results of
Group 2 sample reanalysis will be included in the Final
Engineering Environmental Analysis Report, but an advance
copy will be sent when received.
