r
Adward-Clycle Consultants
Mr. Michael Trujillo
Page 2
June 8, 1988
placed in drums , labeled, sealed and left onsite for subsequent disposal
pending the sample results.
Following their completion, each well will be developed and sampled per
state and EPA protocol . At a minimum, at least four casing volumes of
water will be purged from each well by pumping or bailing. Samples will
be taken with a clean Teflon bailer and handled under standard EPA
Chain-of-Custody procedures. All development and purge water will be
placed in drums , sealed, labeled and left onsite pending the results of
the sample analyses.
Soil and water samples will be submitted to the state-certified
Woodward-Clyde Environmental Laboratory in Pleasant Hill , California for
analyses. Selection of soil samples for analyses will be based
primarily on headspace readings taken in the field and any visual or
olfactory notations made during collection. In general , two to three
samples from each boring will be selected for analyses. If headspace
readings or field observations suggest that hydrocarbon contamination
may be present, three samples will be selected for analyses; one from
near the top of the potentially-contaminated zone, one from near the
bottom, and one from below the zone to confirm the lower extent has been
reached. Should the contaminated zone be extensive, then additional
samples will be selected. Wherever possible, the sample closest to the
air/water interface will be one of tho a selected. If no contamination
is apparent , the sample closest to the water table and possibly one
other s,ibmitted for analysis . All water samples will be
analyzed. The above sample selection rationale deviates somewhat from
that described in the RFP but was confirmed as acceptable and even
preferable in a conversation with Mr. Peter D'Amico on June 7, 1988.
The analytical parameters to be run are dependent on the sample type and
level of contamination per the protocol described in the RFP. In
general , all soil samples submitted for analysis will be analyzed for
total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) by EPA Method 8015 modified. Those
samples containing greater than 500 ppm TPN as well as the sample at the
air/water interface will also be analyzed for benzene, toluene,
ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) by Method 8020, total lead by
Method 7421 , a h lene dibromide b EPA All water
samples will be analyzed for TPH, BTEX and total lead by Methods 8015 ,
602 and 7421 , respectively.
Upon completion of the field activities and receipt of the written
laboratory results , a report will be prepared and submitted to Thrifty
Oil Co. in triplicate. The report will include a summary of the field
activities conducted at the site, boring/well construction logs
including headspace readings , the laboratory results and a site plan
displaying the approximate boring locations and estimated groundwater
gradient.
