IDAUG-30-1996 15:04 ILKEY'S ENGINEERING Is
The potential hazards to personnel working the subject site have been identified
as chemical contamination, potential for fire and explosion, and the physical hazards of
working around heavy equipment and working near an open excavation.
:f • i 110FAVLO10► f • r
P.12
The chemical contaminants of concern for this project are gasoline constituents,
primarily benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene and xylene. The hazards associated with the
chemicals are a potential for fire and explosion, potential worker exposure due to direct
contact with and/or inhalation of vapors of the gasoline constituents.
Gasoline vapors (50 - 100 octane) are moderately to highly toxic via inhalation,
which can cause central nervous system depressions, pneumonities, fatal pulmonary
edema and some addiction if exposures QT he vapors are greater than 300 parts per
million (ppm). Gasoline and oil constituents also pose fire and explosion hazards when
present in sufficient concentrations and with a source of ignition. The flammable range
for gasoline vapors is 1.3 - 6.0 percent by volume in air. During the excavation, gasoline
vapors may potentially accumulate in a confined space due the vapors being heavier than
air. Chemical contamination from gasoline and oil constituents may be present during
the replacement of the lines and will be controlled as follows:
Hazard Control
Contamination Monitor with an LEL meter, detect by smell
and sight. Limit or avoid contact, use
protective equipment as described and, if
necessary, follow with decontamination
measures, as described further in this SSHP.
Fire & Explosion Remove as much product from the lines as
possible.
Keep two 20BC fire extinguishers within
twenty five feet of the work.
Restrict smoking by anyone in the area.
Restrict any source of ignition within twenty
feet of the pipe.
Construction Site Restricted area -barricades and restricted
access will be maintained to prevent
unauthorized traffic in the area,
rP1
